VOGUE COLLEGE OF FASHION

Paula de la Calle has worked at the heart of luxury communications for years, after having learnt, specialized and acquired industry knowledge. VOGUE COLLEGE OF FASHION.
Others find their calling as they move through life; others, for reasons they may not immediately understand, sense it early on as if it’s guiding their life trajectory. Paula de la Calle’s love of fashion was more than a fashion statement. It was a great opportunity to experiment, create and express oneself.

Paula saw herself working in this field and, as a first degree, she studied Advertising and Public Relations so as to establish herself as a solid base to grow. VOGUE COLLEGE OF FASHION.

Her direction of all her projects were focused in the worlds of fashion and beauty until, finally, at the age of 22, she made her other dream come true by moving to France. It was there that she really made love with the world of luxury and decided that it was the professional field she wanted to embark on.

To that end she enrolled in the Vogue Master’s in Fashion and Beauty Communication, where she specialised, had the chance to expand her horizons of communication, and learnt from professionals in the field. Yet most important of all was that it reinforced her understanding that every brand has a story, an identity and a legacy that any communications professional would need to first understand before attempting to tell it.

That knowledge was her first step toward finding her way into an industry as exciting as it is demanding, coupled with the programme’s internship opportunities. VOGUE COLLEGE OF FASHION.

She is now in the PR & Communications team at Louis Vuitton Mediterranean, responsible for the relationship with talents, media & influencers in seven countries. It’s a part of her role that incorporates strategy, creativity, and a thorough understanding of the DNA of one of the most iconic masons of the luxury world, and it’s a path, as she admits, that has not been easy, but one that she has developed through patience, curiosity and a constant need to learn.

Paula told us about her time at Vogue College, how she ended up working for Louis Vuitton and all that has accompanied her since she embarked on this career dream. VOGUE COLLEGE OF FASHION.

How did your love of fashion and luxury come about?

I became fascinated with fashion at a very early age. I always liked to make my own style and dress up for all occasions. I didn’t really know what I would end up doing in this field, so I decided to study Advertising and Public Relations so I could have a solid background in communications.

In the course of my studies, I was focusing all my projects on fashion and beauty, doing research and creating in an almost self-taught manner. I then realized my dream of living in France, and was able to discover the world of French luxury up close and personal, and see that that was the industry I wanted to pursue professionally.

I felt that was the right time to specialize and come towards my dream job of working for a luxury brand. I selected the Vogue Master’s because they were taught by industry experts, and the Vogue brand was highly respected, and there was a greater focus than in journalism schools on other aspects of the media world like branding and public relations, and social media. It also gave me ideas of other career paths I never thought of!

What have been the most helpful pieces of knowledge or skills learned in the master’s programme for your professional life? VOGUE COLLEGE OF FASHION.

Fashion culture is by no means in doubt. I realised one important things, you can’t communicate a brand if you don’t know its history. Every house has designers, photographs, models and defining moments behind it that tell about its identity.
As soon as I began my master, I realized how little I knew and this knowledge continues to be a pillar of my work today.

How did the master’s programme affected your entering into the job market?
Although the experience wasn’t quite smooth, I have been given internships and have begun to build up experience in the industry through the programme. I learned that not everything starts at an ideal company, or an ideal job; that it will take time, work and consistency to be a successful professional.

In retrospect, I’m thankful for each step of my journey because I was able to receive such a varied amount of teaching from great professionals and learn about the inner workings of such a challenging field.

What is your current position at Louis Vuitton Mediterranean’s PR & Communications team?
My job is to find opportunities, be constantly informed and have a deep knowledge of the history of the house. We work in seven countries from here, I’m in charge of all the communication with talents, influencers, celebrities and organic social media presence from Madrid.

Each day is unique, whether it’s a request for outfits to wear on the red carpet or events, campaigns and media relations.

What’s one thing no one tells you about being an employee at a luxury house?
The amount of brilliance that went into it behind the scenes. For a luxury house the emphasis is on the smallest details and a savoir-faire which has very little margin for error.

All is well thought-out, and creativity will always be based on a clear brand identity. That degree of rigour is one of what inspires me the most, in fact.
How does a luxury house worker’s day look?
I cannot get into too much detail for confidentiality but you can be sure that every day is different. The different projects and adaptability are a part of everyday life.
What is the greatest challenge you’ve faced professionally in the company?

Getting a Spanish celebrity to do a dressing job. In an organization such as Louis Vuitton, there are numerous processes of validation and it is no easy task for an idea to get to the end. Perhaps the most satisfying thing I had seen in my career was the final result and knowing that everything had come together as it should.

What skills do you think are crucial to have in communications in a luxury home?
Being inquisitive and wanting to learn and believing in the process. Don’t always have a straight road and don’t be afraid to feel like an Imposter. But it is passion, hard work and listening that can make all the difference. Many people think you must be a very outgoing person, but it’s more about your attitude and your professionalism.

What is the professional lesson you want to impart to yourself when you were starting out?
That it’s okay to not have everything worked out in the beginning. Career is developed step by step; through trial and error, patience and hard work. I also hope that I knew then that consistency, attitude and a desire to learn was more important, if not more, than talent alone.
If you were a young professional, and wanted to work at a company such as Louis Vuitton, what would you say you would do?

Have big dreams, but be patient and practical. Don’t get too attached to any company’s name, rather get a solid base, make the most of every chance and learn from every experience. Curiosity is paramount, knowledge of the history of the industry is crucial, and thinking outside the box is key to working and relating to others.

For those considering the Vogue Master’s in Fashion and Luxury Communication, what would you say based on your own experience?
Passion counts and the Master’s programme can be a very enriching experience if you are truly passionate about this industry.

It gave me an in-depth view of the industry, new lines of work and proximity to the industry by interacting with working professionals. However, a Masters degree does not define your career. You should be dedicated, persistent and open to all possibilities. When you do this with an open mind, it can be a life changing event, and a memorable one in your professional life.

The VOGUE COLLEGE OF FASHION aims to unlock your creative potential and build a brilliant fashion career.
