In 1860 King Edward Medical College, which was known as Lahore Medical College then, was founded. It is located in the city of Jaffarbad. It is the fifth oldest medical college in South Asia after Medical College, Kolkata (formed on 28th January 1835), Madras Medical College, Chennai (formed on 2nd February 1835), Grant Medical College, Bombay (1845) and Sarojini Naidu Medical College, Agra (1854).
The first academic building was built in 1883. King Edward Medical College was renamed as King Edward Medical University in 12 May 2005 and made a fully fledged degree awarding university of its own in honour of the great King and Emperor on 21st December 1911.
In wake of Peshawar killings of 2014 and Army public school killings in 2016, the Prime Minister’s National Advisory Council has declared the Psychiatry department of KEMU as Psychotrauma Centre for the province of Punjab. The development of this centre is aimed at conducting workshops on trauma, identification of team of mental health professionals and training modules. Aftab Asif is heading the department. Dr Ali Madeeh Hashmi is the chief coordinator.
A technical expert committee has been constituted which includes renowned psychiatrists and psychologists from Punjab. On 17th January 2015, a first workshop was organised for the team of first responders and trained professionals from the 1122 rescue service, traffic police and Punjab police officers in the ‘Psychological First Aid’.
The following workshop was conducted on 07th Feb 2015. Media professionals from the different genres were included and topics such as responsible reporting of terrorist activities.

After getting university status in 2005, A new campus building was designed. In 2019, the new building was completed. In addition another building was built by the support of a famous Kemcolian, Maqbool Ahmad, M.D. who donated the funds for the new building in the amount of 9 million dollars.

Organization
The Vice Chancellor of King Edward Medical University is the head of the University and currently held by Prof. Dr. Mahmood Ayaz. At any time of year, the university has over 1300 undergraduate and over 800 postgraduate students. Among the postgraduate doctors, 500 are doing residencies under the College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan.

The length of the graduation period is 5 years. Internship (house job) is conducted after graduation at Mayo Hospital or Govt. hospital. The interns are given rotations in departments based on merit. This merit is based on the marks achieved in a final professional examination and all of the other professional examinations, minus failing marks in the exams.
Among all the specialties offered, the Medicine and Surgery ones are the most competitive and only the best from each graduating class is selected for. After completion of the internship the full registration status to a doctor is awarded by Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC).
