Know how to be prepared, apply and compete effectively for the Open Doors Russian Scholarship 2027 for Master’s, PhD and Postdoctoral Applicants.
Open Doors Russian Scholarship in Russia is a full scholarship for international students to study Bachelor, Master or PhD programs without paying tuition.
Open Doors Scholarship 2027 is a three-stage application process for admission to Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD, or Postdoc programs.Open Doors Scholarship 2027 application process is in three stages and is for admissions to Bachelor’s, Masters, PhD, and Postdoc programs.
For each of the three types of positions—Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD—the process can take two, three or even multiple administrative steps, beginning with a portfolio and entry test, followed by subject tests under proctor, and for PhD students, the process culminates with an interview with a supervisor before the formal process of university placement even begins. The ongoing cycle starts with the registration in August 2026 and ends with the PhD and postdoctoral results in February 2027.
Most information online provides students with what Open Doors offers, and very little explains what happens after students click “Apply” – what documents are required in Stage 1, when are the exams given, whether multiple subject areas imply multiple exams, when are the universities finally selected, and, why a PhD candidate can get through the academic stages but have to find a willing supervisor before the scholarship can be used?
This guide is thus not limited to eligibility or funding. Follows a path of an applicant from account creation to the 1st stage result on 1st November, the online exam round, the PhD supervisor stage and finally the Russian Government quota admission and university placement.
The competitive route for those seeking a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree is basically concluded after the second stage examination. The PhD candidates subsequently go to an interview with the prospective supervisors/doctoral-track managers and the Postdoctoral applicants have a research-presentation and interview process.

Course type Completely online
The term “fully funded” should be taken with a grain of salt, however, as to what it truly means. The more extended grant can be provided by the Russian Government to the winners or runners-up who are admitted to the quota and are ready to study full-time in Russian, but it is not a right of every Open Doors winner.
What documents do you need in stage 1?
There is a tendency of applicants to complicate the first round. The main portfolio will focus on the motivation letter and proof of your education and the online entry test. One may then reinforce the portfolio with evidence of academic, research or professional successes.
The passport is also required by the registration deadline since it will be required for identification at the later stages. The name, citizenship and date of birth you have entered into your account must be the same as those on the passport, including the spelling listed in the machine-readable zone on the passport.
May I be accepted for more than one subject area?
Yes. There is no maximum number of subject areas in which a participant can compete but i’d recommend to apply for 3 subject areas at max but you require a motivation letter for each subject area you want to apply. Ongoing Study Abroad Scholarships
There is one practical difficulty, though: any of the subject areas you study at Stage 2 may need to be examined separately, and exams can be timetabled to take place at the same time.
Choosing three subject areas does not imply that all applicants must choose three subjects or sit three exams – there is no automatic requirement for this. Ongoing Study Abroad Scholarships
If the applicant has not studied multiple subject areas, then they should choose only one, as they may not be able to compete in all. Ongoing Study Abroad Scholarships
Students will complete an Online Proctored Examination.
Candidates who successfully complete Stage 1 will be required to register for Stage 2 and select an examination time by 16th November 2026. The exam is administered online and proctored with a proctoring software.
Your webcam and computer desktop are captured and your identity is checked with your passport uploaded in Stage 1. If an applicant does not pass the identity check, he/she is not allowed to take the assessment. Ongoing Study Abroad Scholarships
The entire session will be 180 minutes:
175 minutes for written response work; and
An oral-response task that should take no more than 5 minutes.
Open Doors provides a subject-area programme and example tasks for applicants to prepare for. Those materials are required reading, and should not be skipped.
What Documents Are Needed at Stage 2?
You do not automatically get a new full university document package just because you meet the criteria to be able to take the examination. Ongoing Study Abroad Scholarships.
Stage 2 primarily requires:
Using an active Open Doors account; Ongoing Study Abroad Scholarships
Your previously uploaded passport; Ongoing Study Abroad Scholarships
